California Foundry History Museum

California State Military Museum

Exhibits reflect California and U.S. military history from Colonial times through today. The museum shares a wide spectrum of history on three gallery floors. Veterans tell war stories and docents lead guided tours everyday at California’s official military museum.

The State Capitol is a working museum that since 1869 has served as home to the legislative branch of state government and the Governor’s Office. Guided tours, informative films, recreated historic rooms and changing exhibits give opportunities to explore the past, present and future of California’s government. Guided tours of Capitol Park are available Memorial Day through Labor Day, or upon request.

California State Indian Museum

Located adjacent to Sutter’s Fort. Self-guided tours provide an opportunity to celebrate the proud heritage of California Indian culture from the traditions of ancestors to contemporary Native artists. Governor’s Mansion State Historic Park

This regal Victorian mansion, home to 13 of California’s governors from 1903 to 1967, is filled with historic furnishings. The 130,000 sq. ft. History Center is home to the Fred C. Heidrick Sr. Antique Ag Collection and the Hays Antique Truck Museum. Leland Stanford Mansion State Historic Park

Built between 1856 and 1872, the four-story, 19,000 sq. ft. mansion has historical and architectural significance. It served as the office of three early California governors (Leland Stanford, Fredrick Low and Henry Haight) and was the site of California’s first presidential visit by Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880. Today, it serves as the State’s official address for diplomatic and business receptions as well as offering guided public tours.

Museum of Medical History

Experience the evolution of medicine from the Gold Rush to today in this unique museum of the Sierra Sacramento Valley Medical Society. A replica of the one-room schools found around the region in the latter half of the 19th century, the Old Sacramento Schoolhouse is furnished with a combination of antiques and reproductions, and it contains collections of photographs, books and desks from an earlier period. A cluster of noteworthy, early Gold Rush commercial structures located within the Old Sacramento Historic District. Included are the 1849 Eagle Theatre; the 1853 B.F. Hastings Building, once home to the California Supreme Court and western terminus of the Pony Express; and the 1855 Big Four Building, which today houses the Huntington & Hopkins Hardware Store and the California State Railroad Museum Library.

Established in 1849 during the Gold Rush, this 28-acre Victorian-era cemetery is the final resting place for over 25,000. Pioneers buried in the cemetery include John A. Sutter, Jr., founder of the city; Edwin Bryant and Margaret Crocker, Sacramento’s “Patrons of the Arts;” and Mark Hopkins, one of railroading’s legendary “Big Four.” Call about free historical and garden tours, scheduled March-September.
